Work

Microsoft

In February of 1998, I left the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and started work for Microsoft Corporation, joining many good friends who already worked there. I started as a Program Manager in the Exchange Server group, specifically working in the core transport group. My job was to worry about how messages get from one server to another in the most efficient way.

The best description I have found for a Program Manager is on Microsoft's Jobs Website. For more information about our product, see its web site. We're all extremely proud of our product and its functionality. One of my main goals has been to make sure that it is as Internet-Standards-Driven as possible.

In 2002, I changed my area of focus and became a Group Program Manager, responsible for the program management team that managed all components of system management of Exchange. I managed a team of 12. This was a big departure from the transport and protocols area that I had worked on for the past 4 years. It was really good for me to change to a different technical area of responsibility.

In 2003 I made another big change, while staying in Exchange, becoming a Product Unit Manager, responsible for components and products for the small business. Exchange is very successful among large businesses, but is not so successful (yet) among small businesses, at least in terms of percent share. Actually a lot more small businesses run Exchange than large businesses, but since there are 100x more small businesses than large businesses, we have a long way to go. I work with the Windows Small Business Server team as well as other teams in Microsoft to try to make an even better product for small businesses.

I was really geeky when I got my first office and took a bunch of pictures and even a short video Office tour!. Also, here's a view of my office from the hall. And here's the view from my chair

I have had several different offices since that first one, although the only difference is that my current one is smaller than that one, and has a window. But it's still about as sparse.
