David's Around-Town Page
Stories and pictures of wacky misadventures (sorry about stealing
that phrase, Mike).
It will be in reverse-chronological order as I add things.

May, 1996 Tornado Damage
In May, around the time the movie Twister came
out, we had a tornado that hit about 3 blocks from my apartment.
Luckily, I was in Seattle at the time. My roommates were not home
(one was at a movie, no, not Twister, the other was at a concert).
- The tornado went around a big field next to an elementary school.
Some houses that bordered the field didn't fare so well.
Several houses bore the brunt of the storm while across the
street there were a few broken windows.
Trip to Chicago
Declan, Mike Hollyman, and I went up to Chicago for a day during
Spring Break just for fun. We went to visit Jason and went with him
to the airport to pick up his sister and her friend, who were
returning from Spring Break. We also enjoyed Pop's Roast Beef for
the first time, and MAN, was it good. We had our usual wacky misadventures
while there.
Jason in
front of his parents' palacial estate in the fabulous Beverly
district of Chicago.
On the way to the airport, we found the Irish butcher shop where
Declan's father had worked when they lived in Chicago. You'll see
that they have Declan's favorite meat item on sale (guess which one
listed on the sign is his favorite).
The butcher shop had something interesting living on the roof.
We had heard that Jason's parents had recently bought a Lexus, but
we were surprised to find it parked at Midway!
Here's another
shot of the most funky-fresh and fly Lexus in the Chicagoland
area.
CCSO Going-Away Party
Beth Engelbrecht-Wiggans
threw a party for various people who were leaving CCSO for other
departments and companies. Several of my friends were in
attendance.
CCSO Christmas Party
Most of my pictures from this didn't turn out so well, so you will
only see a few of the choice pictures here.
Misc
- Right before Christmas, we had our first big ice/snow storm. My
car did OK except for one wheel not turning almost all the way to
work one morning, and some significant amounts of ice on the
windshield. However, when it gets cold, I tend to become goofy looking.
- I recently upgraded my RS/6000 model 230 to a 250, which is
Power-PC based. This required a motherboard swap as well as a new
video card. After several months on order, the motherboard arrived.
Here you can see our
Price-Is-Right-Girl-In-Training Mike Hollyman sitting on the
crate that contained the upgrade. Several people
had theories as to what was in the crate (note the pallette below
it):
- Two little people holding the motherboard to protect it from
jarring in transit (boy, would they be pissed that I waited for the
IBM field engineer to open it!)
- Several new C10's accidentally shipped to me
- An entirely new Model 250 and 20" monitor
- A whole lot of air
Well, it turned out to be an entirely new RS/6000 Model 250, each
part individually wrapped in its own box. So the last one was the
closest.
- I just bought a (new to me)car.
It's a '93 Mazda 626 and I think it's pretty neat.

demonstrating just how crazy we are. Click on the image to see who they

Halloween 1995
Declan Fleming threw
his usual Halloween bash again this year. On our trip to California
this past summer, Declan, Jason DeHaan, and I
bought ugly little frogs in Chinatown, San Francisco. Declan had a
contest to name his. I dressed up
as The Frog. I got a green sweatsuit, made a lillypad out of
cardboard, and painted my face green. Here are some choice pictures
from the party:
